Opening a Company Bank Account in Serbia: What Banks Ask For

Admin·August 14, 2026·5 min

The company is registered, the tax ID issued, and then comes the step whose duration surprises many: opening a business bank account. For domestic founders it is usually routine, but for companies with a foreign owner or director it can drag on for weeks if you start unprepared. Here is what banks ask for and how to pass on the first attempt.

What banks typically require

  • Registration documents: the Business Registers Agency excerpt, incorporation act, tax ID.
  • Identification: ID documents of the legal representative and, for foreign citizens, a passport.
  • Beneficial owner: banks must identify the ultimate beneficial owner, so ownership chains through foreign companies require documentation of the entire chain, usually with certified translations.
  • Business description: what the company does, where inflows come from and where outflows go. For foreign owners these questions go deeper.

Specifics for foreign founders

  • Personal presence. Some banks require the director to appear in person at least once for identification, while others allow identification via proxy or video procedures. Policies differ between banks and change over time, so travel is planned in advance.
  • Translations and certifications. Foreign documents generally need certified translations, and some an apostille. This is the most common reason applications get returned.
  • Choosing the bank. Banks differ in their experience with non-residents, foreign-currency inflow fees and the quality of English e-banking. The wrong choice is paid on every inflow from abroad.

Practical tips

  • Prepare a complete file before the first visit: one clean document package shortens the process by weeks.
  • If the director is a non-resident, align account opening with their visit: see our guide on non-resident directors.
  • Request a foreign-currency account immediately if you invoice abroad.

We guide you through the whole procedure

We help clients choose a bank, prepare the file and pass identification on the first attempt, as part of incorporation support and ongoing accounting. Book a conversation or send us a message before you book the bank appointment: you will save at least one trip.
